Quick Review

The 2012 BMW X1 builds on the pedigree established by the X3 and X5, cementing the manufacturer's position as a producer of luxury SAV's – Sports Acitivity Vehicles. Combining the styling of heavy-duty sports vehicles with the comfort touches expected in a BMW, the X1 provides everything you'd want in an entry-level luxury car.

The X1 is a smaller, sportier, more affordable version of its bigger siblings. It displays the same great exterior designs in a more compact body, while still offering excellent interior space for cargo and passengers.

The engine is a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbo 16-valve offering, which provides an impressive 150 horsepower. However, the X1 has a 6-speed automatic transmission, which does provide smooth shifting, but is not as responsive as a good manual alternative.

Being one of the more basic BMW models, the inside of the X1 is not dripping in the opulent touches that you may associate with top end luxury models. However, the interior is of the highest quality and offers a number of seating configurations, enabling you to make the most of the vehicle and transport four passengers in comfort.

There are not many direct competitors to the X1 (the Audi Q5 and Land Rover Range Rover Evoque are bigger and less sporty than this compact activity vehicle). The X1 is more agile and more affordable – and it is as perfect for driving out of the city for a weekend as it is pulling up outside a quality restaurant on a busy Friday night.

If you're looking for something sporty to get your foot on the ladder of luxury car ownership, the BMW X1 is undoubtedly an option you should consider.
