Traffic in Dubai

According to the World Health Organization, over 1.25 million people are killed annually due to road accidents, making it the tenth leading cause of death worldwide. If action is not taken to address this serious issue, traffic accidents are seen to become the seventh leading cause of death by 2030.

Although there are a myriad number of risk factors that cause traffic accidents, the most serious is undoubtedly poor driving habits. These can encompass distracted driving, not following the speed limit or other traffic rules and reckless driving.

Here is a list of good habits that all drivers must adopt to stay safe on any highway around the world:

Stay focused

Mobile phone driving

One of the major reasons why collisions occur is because drivers are distracted and using their mobile phones. Although there is a prevalent belief that using a hands-free cellphone is safer, many studies have shown that it is as dangerous, if not more dangerous, since they give an illusion of security. So, don’t use your phone while driving, and ensure that your eyes are on the road and your hands are on the steering wheel. If you must use your phone, pull over to the side of the road.

Follow rules and regulations

One of the most common rules that drivers violate is the speed limit, since going over it can make it more difficult to brake during emergency situations. Also make sure that you slow down when you see the traffic light turn amber and follow traffic signs.

Don’t drive recklessly

Car Swerving

This category covers a multitude of driving sins including passing on the right, braking and accelerating abruptly, and swerving. Reckless driving makes accidents more likely since other drivers will have a harder time predicting your movements.

Keep a safe distance

One of the most important safety habits you can adopt is to avoid tailgating the vehicle ahead since it greatly increases the risk of a collision. Make sure you keep at least a 2 to 3 second gap between your car and the car in front.

Drive well rested

One risk factor for traffic accidents that has emerged recently is drivers who get into accidents because they are tired or have fallen asleep behind the wheel. Losing control, even for just a few seconds, can lead to an accident. Make sure that you are fully rested when you get behind the wheel and, if you feel drowsy, pull over and rest for a while.

Be aware

Mirror check

The safest drivers are those who are not over-confident when they are on the roads and remain aware of the possibility of driver error. The most complacent drivers are those who are the most likely to make mistakes.

Good luck and stay safe out there!
