NissanCOVID has worked as a trailblazer for us to go green and adopt practices that are sustainable. With the sombre aftereffects of climate change and global warming dawning upon us, several scholars and environmentalists have iterated time and again that reckless exploitation of resources must stop and that the corporates can bring about a radical change in the air quality, land and water resources of the world by implementing practices where output meets the scale in such a way that there is a surplus remaining for the future generations.

For a long time, several protocols have been issued by countries to particularly curtail the impact of carbon footprint which is spewed in the highest quantum by automobiles. Japan, which follows austere yardsticks for the permissible limit of carbon footprint, released the Kyoto Protocol whereby certificates could be issued by the Government to companies and only a restricted amount of carbon compounds could be released into the air.

With time, several brands resorted to producing small cars, electric vehicles, ‘Kei cars’ in Japan that suited the family needs and the environment but much of all that has contributed insignificantly for the environment. This meant a limpid and well-defined sustainability policy had to be drafted and enforced. Hence, Nissan has come up with one in its Sustainability Report for 2021.

It delves deep into areas such as environment, traffic safety, diversity and inclusion, quality, supply chain, employees, community engagement and corporate governance and compliance. Another motive behind the report of Nissan was to provide a fillip to transparency and garner appraisal from the people which will lead to the betterment of their operations.

It is the 18th year since the sustainability report came to being and this time around, the Japanese marque took a step towards hosting an online, public seminar elucidating the targets and action plan of sustainability and to make things more transparent.

Two years back, it had also announced a comprehensive sustainability strategy bearing the moniker, Nissan Sustainability 2022 which pays heed to the Environmental, Social and Government criteria which every brand is required to meet with diligence in Japan as it directs them towards taking radical steps for the environment.

It is awe-inspiring for brands to embark on the road less travelled and give back to the society what it takes from it. Nissan in particular, believes that reaching a level of carbon neutrality, safeguarding the non-renewable resources and taking measures which protect its stakeholders are the values which it keeps at the core of its operations.

One of the company’s objectives is “driving innovation to enrich people’s lives,” in lines of which, it seeks to facilitate a more organised, eco-friendly and pure surroundings. It also seeks for a sustainable society which gets the best quality products and technology sans any adverse effects.

Speaking on the Sustainability Report, 2021, is Makoto Uchida, Nissan’s CEO and President who comments, “We are connected to society in many ways that go beyond the products, technologies to services that Nissan provides to people all over the world. We are expected to address environmental and social issues, such as achieving carbon neutrality across our operations, preserving natural resources, and working to protect the human rights of people connected to our supply chain. Through innovation and sound business activities, Nissan will continue to respond by providing products and technologies that enrich people’s lives, thereby aiming to provide solutions and contribute to the development of a sustainable society.”
