For 2012, the Mitsubishi Outlander gets an "Eco" indicator to support more fuel-efficient driving. A new auto-dimming rearview mirror with a backup camera is also available.

Smaller than most midsize SUVs, the Mitsubishi Outlander faces credible competition in both the midsize and compact SUV segments. The Outlander compares well with the Kia Sorento, a similar compact/midsize SUV. If compactness is important, the Toyota RAV4 is a worthy rival; its optional V6 engine gives good performance and has lots of cargo space. Like the Outlander, the RAV4 claims an optional third row, but (also like the Outlander) this is a bit smaller–really only suitable for children. Another compact SUV to consider is the Honda CR-V, an excellent family vehicle with a spacious, comfortable cabin and great fuel economy. The CR-V is affordable and has plenty of attractive features, including a rearview camera, a standard USB port, and Bluetooth. It also has generous cargo storage.

The 2012 Mitsubishi Outlander is sporty enough and fun to drive. The ride is quiet and comfortable, though not luxurious. The underpowered engine makes the drive a little less exciting than it could be.

Overall, the Mitsubishi Outlander is a reasonable option for shoppers who want a practical, economical SUV that's affordable and compact yet big enough to accommodate a large family.
