Quite simply, the Golf R is the best VW Golf yet, and this Black Edition takes it a step further! This is one fun hot hatch. The chassis is rock solid, grip is outstanding, and the ride is a near perfect balance of comfort and firmness. Steering is light around parking lots and such, weighing up nicely as speeds increase. There are not many cars that feel this planted both going straight down the road and pushing it through corners. It is one of those rare cars that the harder you push, the better and more rewarding it feels.
The formula stays largely unchanged from the previous Mk 7.5 Golf R, sticking to what has worked well: a 2.0litre four-cylinder turbo engine up front, R-Performance 4MOTION all-wheel drive with torque vectoring, and a 7speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox. The looks are tastefully refreshed, with a more aggressive front bumper with stretched intakes and redesigned LED headlights. The Black Edition goes darker still, with 19" Estoril Black alloy wheels, darkened IQ.Light LED taillights, rear spoiler and a gloss black rear diffuser, giving it a stealthier, more menacing stance.
The Golf R Black Edition is an extremely easy car to drive super quick. It has plenty of traction, pace and grip.
The 2.0L turbocharged engine produces 328 BHP (333 PS) and 420Nm of torque, sent through the 7-speed DSG. It has all the straight-line performance you could need, and the quad-tip Akrapovič titanium exhaust system gives it a soundtrack to match.
Inside is where the biggest changes are. The cabin gets a refreshed trim layout, carbon fibre interior trim and an
R-specific Digital Cockpit Pro display, along with a larger 12.9" touchscreen with built-in navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The leather sports seats with R embroidery are power adjustable with memory on the driver’s side, and the heated multi-function leather steering wheel, head-up display and Harman/Kardon premium sound system make it a properly premium place to be.
