Quick Review

The Volvo S80 is a comfortable and spacious executive car – however you do sacrifice driving performance a bit, compared to some of its competitors.

For 2012, there are new trim levels available, a few interior tweaks and Volvo’s City Safety technology now comes as standard. The interior is a nice place to be, with minimalist design and modern materials. As Volvo’s biggest saloon, there’s ample room inside for four sizable adults. The boot space is good, though not as big as some rivals. Folding back seats do, however, give some extra flexibility.

The Volvo S80 is a comfortable car to drive. The suspension is supple, ensuring a quiet cabin, and there are plenty of seat adjustments. The S80 excels at motorway cruising, with little wind noise. It can also handle the corners well, feeling secure and inspiring confidence. However, steering does lack feedback – especially the V6 AWD model.

Engine wise, the 2.0 L base engine is adequate enough for every day driving, but lacks a bit of refinement. The turbocharged T6 might be a better choice if you want a more lively drive. However, the drive is still comfortable, but it’s by no means exhilarating.

If you’re looking for a luxury sedan around the Volvo’s price range, there are other options as well. The Cadillic CTS and Hyundai Genesis are both capable choices. The Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes E-Class all have good handling, power and desirability – but all command a higher price tag.

If you want a safe, comfortable and understated luxury sedan, then the Volvo S80 is a very sensible choice.
