Quick Review

The Volvo S40 is an upscale small car. New for 2012 are some changes to the styling, new coordinating colours and updated "Spider" five-spoke, diamond-cut wheels. The various proprietary safety systems have been upgraded, as have the Volvo Sensus infotainment system and the Volvo On Call.

The S40 has a lot to recommend it. The 2012 model has a compact and sporty profile, belying its surprisingly roomy cabin. Premium materials and lots of high-tech gadgets make the interior feel even more special. Volvo's are known for their extensive range of high-tech safety features as standard, and the S40 is no exception. Performance is decent, though not brilliant; an alert steering response and high-tech suspension keep the ride comfortable and reasonably agile.

The Audi A4 is another upscale small car; it offers far superior performance to the S40, though at a price. The base model isn't too expensive, but as you try to replicate the S40's impressive range of standard features from the Audi's range of optional ones, the price soon adds up. You could also try Volkswagen Golf GTI – competitively priced compared to Audi A4, and offering excellent fuel economy as well as a comfortable interior and good performance.

The S40 is a small family car for the shopper who's willing to pay a premium for safety and comfort. The S40 isn't thrillingly sporty, but it is comfortable, maneuverable and offers a smooth, confident drive.
