Quick Review

First introduced in 1964, the Mustang is one of the most enduring, legendary and desirable motor vehicles Ford has ever produced. The 2013 model is no exception, retaining its ability to turn heads and make other road users green with envy while putting a smile on the face of its driver.

With several major changes introduced the previous year including upgraded brakes, a new powertrain, improved suspension and electric power steering, the updates for the 2013 have been a little more conservative.

The single biggest innovation is the revival of the Boss 302, a high-performance model originally produced between 1969 and 1970. Featuring a 5-litre engine delivering 444 horsepower through a 6-speed manual box (automatic transmission is not an option). The Boss 302 is unashamedly a race car for the road with its air intakes specially adjusted to produce an extra growl while accelerating hard.

At the other end of the scale it is clear that even the entry level V6 2013 Mustang, which produces an impressive 305 hp, is made with driving enthusiasts in mind. This car is just about as far from a family runaround as it is possible to get and best suited to transport no more than two adults. While both the regular coupe and the convertible variant are capable of carrying four adults, there is precious little room in the back and rear seat passengers are likely to become uncomfortable during extended journeys.

As the original pony car, the Mustang is still the vehicle that rivals the Dodge Challenger and the Chevrolet Camaro, yet it remains at the head of the pack thanks to its superb handling and throttle response.
