Planning to buy a new cost effective compact city car? We have done the homework for you. Here are our top 6 low cost compact sedans under 60,000 AED when purchased brand new from the showrooms. Some of these are strong on resale value, others are loaded with technology to give you the best possible ambience. What they all have in common is they are relatively new to the market and they are competitively priced among their peers. So here we are, the top 6 city cruisers under 60K AED in UAE:

#1 Toyota Yaris Sport

The new Yaris Sport is priced at 56,900 AED and surprisingly has slightly more luggage space than it's elder brother, Toyota Corolla. Not only is it very practical, it is also very stylish, particularly in red. For this price, the Yaris Sport features a leather wrapped steering wheel and a sporty speedometer. Ofcourse everything is manual including the seat controls but that is to be expected in this price range. The resale value in Middle East is excellent and the spare parts will not burn a hole in your pocket.

#2 Hyundai Elantra 1.6

Priced at 55,900 AED the new 2014 Elantra comes with an upgraded 6 speed transmission, along with features such as power windows, power steering, front fog lamps, high mount stop lamp and keyless entry. Add to that some seriously good looks and we have a front runner among compact sedans. There are some drawbacks too. The resale value is not as high as Toyota and other Japanese brands. The reliability and aftersales is not as well established as it could be. So if you want to keep this car for less than three years and then sell it off, it's definitely a good choice to consider.

#3 Kia Cerato 1.6 LX

Priced at 59,900 AED, the cousin of Hyundai Elantra, Kia Cerato comes with superior styling and tech. In this heat, Kia Cerato is one of the few compact sedans to have rear A/C vents which are a blessing for rear passengers. Also offered as standard are power windows, Bluetooth, keyless entry, central locking and (gasp!) ISOFIX child safety anchors. Lots of tech as standard, thanks to tough competition from Japanese models. Like Hyundai, reliability and resale value are not key strengths of Kia. It makes up for it by having a distinctive front grille and offering navigation and sunroof in top spec models.

#4 Nissan Sunny 1.5 SL

You can get a full options Nissan Sunny at 56,300 AED and what's more, you won't even notice it! It's a plain vanilla sedan that doesn't bother with fancy schmancy styling. The full options model comes with only power windows. The steering wheel has urethane covers. Be grateful that Bluetooth is included. The headlights are plain halogen (but front fog lamps are included). Yet, it has one of the best resale values in the market and a reputation for solid reliability, something that a lot of people value when they buy an economic car. This is one of those cars you can keep for over 3 years and it will still give you great mileage and less hassle on repairs. The spare parts are not as costly as, say Honda and aftersales service (at least in UAE) enjoys a good reputation. If there is one sedan that screams value for money, this is it.

#5 Volkswagen Polo Sedan S

Did we just hear "German Engineering"? Yes, Volkswagen has joined the compact sedan war by launching a German engineered Polo S which is priced at a paltry 57,500 AED. The Germans are never that cheap! What happened? Well, for one the car has no real features to speak of. Nothing. Zip. Everything is manual, bare bones, no-frills. The style is quite plain too. It's key strength? You guessed it! This is a Volkswagen German car which not only has superior build quality but also enjoys a half decent decent aftersales reputation. The drive is not bad too by the way. Think about it. This is the cheapest way to score a Volkswagen in your garage.

#6 Peugeot 301 Allure

For a French car, this is decidedly big. The oft touted 'game changer' has 800 mm of rear leg room and class leading luggage space of 640 liters. It's aftersales servicing (at least in UAE) is done every 10,000 km rather than every 5,000 km, which means per service the cost is lower compared to other models. With a price tag of 58,500 AED, it offers all this along with features like Automatic AC, leather steering wheel, front fog lamps, power steering, even a cigar lighter! What more do you need? On the flip side, build quality is not the best and aftersales options are quite limited. For example, getting spare parts can be quite difficult compared to Japanese or Korean models. Also the number of service centers for Peugeot are much less than, say Nissan or Toyota.
