Car Care Tips

A car may be the second most valuable purchase by most individuals or families, after a house. Depending on the brand, model, and variant, a car can be quite a costly investment, but it has become a necessity in most countries around the world. Because of the cost and safety, keeping a car in top shape is a must for all car owners.

Here are the main components that need to be checked regularly to keep your car running in excellent condition.

Oil

Engine Oil Check

Oil is the lubricant that keeps the engine running smoothly. A car can’t run when oil level is low or if it has become dirty due to regular use. The dipstick can indicate the level of oil and even show if it has become dirty. Car dealers usually set schedules for new cars to be brought in for an oil change or top-up, traditionally every 5,000 – 10,000 kilometers.

Tire Pressure

Tire Pressure Check

Overinflated tires can cause blowouts. Underinflated tires can damage your wheels and consume more fuel. Keeping the tire pressure at proper levels should be a regular task for all car owners. The recommended tire pressure level can be seen in the car’s manual or is usually printed beneath the driver-side door. Tire pressure gauges are affordable and should always be a part of the essential car tools carried when driving.

Brakes

Brake Check

Although the whole brake system is too complex for the common driver to comprehend, one thing that is replaceable and can easily be checked is the brake pad. There are visual and audible signs (squeaking sounds under braking) that a brake pad needs to be replaced.

Engine Coolant

Engine Coolant Check

No matter how smooth a car engine runs, there will always be heat buildup caused by the internal combustion and the friction between the moving components. It’s the engine coolant’s job to keep the engine cool. But like other liquids in the car, the coolant gets depleted after some time and needs to be filled up. Without adequate coolant, the water pump and even the engine itself can be damaged.

Air Filter

Air Filter Check

The air filter keeps unwanted elements out of your engine, so it gets dirty easily. When that happens, a car may consume 10% more fuel compared to normal consumption. Air filters can be easily replaced and are cheap to do so. There is no reason not to check, clean and replace the air filter regularly.

Tire Tread

Tire Tread Check

The tires make the car move as it grips the road surface when the engine moves the wheels. It also makes the car stop when the brakes are applied because of that same grip. When the treads on the tires have become thin, driving on slippery roads can be dangerous. Looking for signs of wear/cracks along the sidewall should be a regular task for every car owner.
