The phone rang, it had arrived. The Nissan 370Z, the car I had been eagerly waiting to get my hands on. Our test came finished in bright Solid Red and it certainly was a head turner. There was a higher likelihood of winning the lottery than going unnoticed driving this beauty around town. Our test car was fitted with the Sport package which meant a few of the goodies we received were, euro-tuned sport shock absorbers, a viscous limited slip differential and a set of absolutely gorgeous Rays 19" alloys wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza high performance tires.

Interior

Open the door to the 370Z and the first word that will come to mind is "premium". I was thrilled when I discovered Nissan had not skimped on the technological front. A number of manufacturers feel it is justifiable to provide less kit on their sportier cars but that isn't the case with Nissan. GPS, rear view camera, Bluetooth, a brilliant sound system, push button start, heated seats, you name it, it's all there on the 370Z.

The power adjustable bucket seats are wrapped in a combination of leather and suede and even offer lumbar support. The centre console follows the same design and houses the easy to function infotainment unit found in majority of Nissan's range including the Pathfinder and the Maxima. Above the centre console, 3 small gauges are positioned towards the driver and display information such as engine temperature, battery voltage and the time. The 370Z also packs in a banging Bose sound system with 8 speakers and 2 subwoofers. Yes, you read that right.

Sadly there were a few aspects where the 370Z did disappoint as well. For starters, due to the combined B and C pillars, visibility is pathetic. You have to check the side mirror at least thrice, position your body awkwardly and then begin changing lanes, still unsure of what's going on in your blind spot. I reckon a blind spot monitoring system or camera could do the 370Z some good! Secondly, the boot is a joke. It isn't wide enough to store a whole lot and more importantly you can't store anything tall either since you'd shatter the rear glass in the bargain.

Drive

The 370Z comes fitted with a 3.7 litre V6 that packs in 332 horsepower and 374 Nm of torque. Put that pedal to the metal and this translates to a 0 - 100 km/h time of 4.9 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. Stopping isn't an issue either since the 370Z is equipped with 4 piston massive 14 inch Nissan Sport vented disks upfront and 2 piston 13.8 inch Nissan Sport vented disks on the rear.

The 7 speed automatic transmission is brilliant and surely one of the best I have ever driven. It clings on to a gear and doesn't up shift for you  even at 7,500 RPM! There's a small red light that flashes in the RPM cluster to indicate the ideal time to shift into the next gear as well; follow it and you get a perfect shift every single time! Since the 370Z also has SynchoRev Match, every time you downshift,  the RPM is at the exact position to give you the best possible acceleration in that particular gear.

As you'd expect in a sports car, there is an immense amount of grip and the handling is simply phenomenal even at very high speeds. Initially, a few people may feel the steering too tight but you soon realize the benefits of this. Turn the steering wheel and the 370Z will charge towards the exact direction it's nose is facing. The exhaust note is deep and a lot, lot louder than I had anticipated. Like!

You must be warned though, the downside to this absolute beast is it's extremely thirsty 3.7 litre engine. I had barely managed to cover 400 kilometers on a full tank. However, now that I think of it, that's a small price to pay for the amount of joy derived when driving the 370Z.

Verdict

Quite simply then, I think I've fallen in love with yet another automobile. Sure, it has its flaws and maybe I should make arrangements to acquire my own petrol station first. But the fact remains that if I had AED 149,000, I wouldn't think twice before buying a 370Z for myself.
