The Japanese have been dominating the world of affordable and reliable family cars for a long enough time for us to equate the nation to the one that only makes such cars. While that notion may not hold true on rare occasions, the Honda Motor Company will fiercely battle its cars’ incredible success among the masses – a notion the company will win. In its conquest of making some of the best and most practical cars in the market, the Japanese auto giant conceptualized and published the Civic. The Honda Civic, since its birth in 1972, has become one of the best cars in its class and even gone on to win several awards. Oh, an interesting fact – Honda has sold well over 18-million units of the Civic so far – a figure that’s nothing short of amazing.

Honda Civic price and rivals in the UAE

Presently in its eleventh-generation form, the latest Civic is based on the new and improved Honda Architecture platform. This not only makes it stronger and safer than its precursor, but also allows for better and more efficient powertrains in the future. Oh, the new HR-V crossover is based on the same platform. In the UAE, the new Honda Civic can cost about AED, 124,900 for the 1.5 Sport trim. Obviously, that’s quite a high figure for what is, essentially, an affordable and compact family sedan. Then again, with the number of improvements and shuffling that has been happening in this segment, such a hike in prices is far from shocking. Going up against the likes of the new Hyundai Elantra, Renault Megane and Nissan Sentra, the new Honda Civic doesn’t accept defeat in any of the aspects it competes in.

Honda Civic exterior design

The new Honda Civic that we see and recognize today, came about in 2021 as the latest avatar of the eleventh generation of the breed. Compared to the model it replaces, this new Civic boasts a brand-new design language. At the front, the new Civic looks far sportier than its even Sport variant predecessor – there’s a larger bumper with more aggressive styling, larger headlamps and a flatter hood. Around the sides, there’s no change in the windowline and its design, though the door panels and side skirts have been restyled. Also, the wing mirrors have gone under the knife as well.

The rear of the new Honda Civic gets a decklid spoiler, followed by a heavily-revamped taillamp cluster and bumper fascia. The whole change in design is such that it lends this model of the Civic a clean yet contemporary look sans any bit of ‘overdoing’ on the styling bit. If you thought the previous avatar was a bit overdone, then you’ll like this one far more for sure. Obviously, the sloping roofline has not been altered at all – it continues to enhance this sedan’s sporty appeal to this day. Honda UAE is offering the new Civic in colors such as Platinum White, Lunar Silver, Meteoroid Gray, Crystal Black, Coffee Cherry Red and Brilliant Sporty Blue. And in terms of its luggage-carrying capacity, the new Civic’s boot space stands at around 497 liters, which is more than respectable.

Honda Civic interior design and feel

While the wheelbase of the new Honda Civic has grown from 2.7 meters to 2.736 meters, the actual exterior footprint of this sedan remains quite compact as always. On the other hand, the insides of this model of the Civic will make you rather fall in love with, especially if you’re someone that’s attracted to a combination of sophisticated gel of minimalism with (some) German design influence. This can be witnessed when you look at the Civic’s cockpit that blends mesh-like front air vents with features such as a stand-out tablet-like head unit, a thick yet leather-wrapped steering wheel, sporty-looking seats, easy-to-operate but neatly-designed knobs on the center console, and shiny trim bits all over to elevate the feel-good factor of this cabin.

With that extra bit of wheelbase, you might think that the rear-seat legroom has really improved – well, it has not. It’s definitely better in context of its precursor, but it won’t make you feel any shorter (in a good way). However, it seems that Honda has improved the build quality over the old model, and that does reveal itself when you start feeling some of the materials and trim inside this cabin. The seats, overall, are quite decent and (especially at the front) do hold you pretty well. Moreover, though the roof dips, you’ll not feel like your head will keep hitting the roof too often – even if you’re on the taller side.

Honda Civic features and safety equipment

Over the years, Honda has obviously kept adding things to the Civic to keep it relevant and substantial. To make you feel that you’ve got your money’s worth, Honda has chucked in equipment such as 17-inch alloys, Remote Control Engine Starter, an electric sunroof, Smart Entry with push-button start, automatic climate control, paddle shifters, a height-adjustable driver’s seat, Sport pedals, a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, and an audio system with four speakers & four tweeters.

The new Honda Civic gets safety nannies that encapsulate Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Hill Start Assist, Brake Over Ride System, Traction Control System, Vehicle Stability Assist, Agile Handling Assist, ABS with EBD & Brake Assist, Electric Parking Brake with Brake Hold, ISOFIX anchors, at least front airbags, parking sensors with Multi-Angle Rearview Camera. Depending on the variant you get, these safety features may feel beefier or not.

Honda Civic powertrain and performance

The new Honda Civic is powered by a 123hp, 1.6-liter four-banger that also develops 151Nm of peak torque. All this goes to the front wheels through a CVT gearbox – sending the Civic from naught to 100 kmph in about 11.5 seconds. If you’ve the road and space in front of you, then you’ll eventually hit a top whack of 200 kmph. And with figures already published, the Honda Civic 1.6 could do a combined 5.4 L/100 km, which translates to 18.5 kpl.

Should you buy the new Honda Civic?

The Honda Civic has always been known to be one of the most accomplished and efficient family sedans in the market. With this modernized and updated model, the Japanese automaker is promoting its prowess over the segment without any of the huffing & puffing. Given a price tag of around 125,000 dirhams, this is definitely not a “over-the-weekend” purchase. However, the new Honda Civic makes its case as being one of the best in its class without any of the huffing & puffing.
