Four Reasons The Mclaren 570S Will Be The Car To Beat

Mclaren has revealed the first car of its new entry-level ‘Sports Series’ range; the 570S coupé.  It comes with a detuned version of Mclaren’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo engine (570hp and 600nm of torque) but is also a relative featherweight at 1313kg.

• Both of the 570S’s main rivals – the Porsche 911 Turbo S (Prices and specs of Porsche 911) and the upcoming Audi R8 V10 (Prices and specs of Audi R8 V10) are significantly heavier; the Porsche weighs in at 1605kg, nearly 300kg more than the 570S, while the Audi (in 610hp spec) weighs 1454kg, still over 130kg more than the Mclaren.
• Though the traction from the Audi and Porsche’s 4WD systems may offer an initial advantage, once moving, the 570S should be able to claw back some time thanks to its lightweight construction and similar power.
• Performance aside, the Mclaren is the only one of the three to utilise an F1-style carbon-fibre chassis, which, as well as keeping the weight to a minimum, makes the platform stiffer than its rivals and allows the car to corner harder and faster. We think the Porsche and the Audi have a serious fight on their hands.
• Mclaren is a much more exclusive brand thanks to its F1 and supercar history. Audi’s and Porsche’s are great cars but nowhere near as desirable.
