As absurd as it sounds, it’s true. Audi, one of Germany’s most innovative automakers, has begun researching and developing a new suspension set-up that replaces traditional dampers with electromechanical ones.

The battery charging suspension, possesses the ability to convert kinetic energy into electricity, and from what research the brand has carried out so far, it works out to approximately 3 watts on a well-paved motorway or up to an impressive 613 watts on rougher roads.

Simply put, the worse the road, the greater the electricity generated by the electromechanical dampers. In turn, since the engine has to focus less on charging the battery, it is expected to burn less fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by around 3g/km.

Unlike traditional dampers which absorb energy and dissipate it in the form of heat, Dr.-Ing Stefan Knirsch, technical board member at Audi said, “With the new electromechanical damper system in the 48-volt electrical system, we put this energy to use.”

Although still in its early days, the brand proclaims that the eROT system is certainly plausible in upcoming models. Seeing how innovative and ground-breaking the technology is, something tells us it’ll be apt for the upcoming all-new Audi A8.
