Drawing immense impetus from the former tagline of ‘Vorsprung Durch Technik’ and the existing ‘#FutureIsAnAttitude,’ it was only expected by hard-core Audi fanatics for the German brand to launch EVs that were fast, took the baton for continuing the trend of wearing minimalistic designs in an elegant uniform, were spacious and refined to the pinnacle and above all, aggrandised comfort and luxury quotient through technology that was unbeknownst to even the most tech-savvy.

Navigating in this direction, the brand first launched the E-Tron SUV with pomp and show a few years back and shortly after the inception of the E-Tron GT and the enterprise’s fastest car ever, the RS E-Tron GT, it has now hit the sweet spot between performance and practicality, sedan and SUV silhouettes with the E-Tron Sportback which has been made available in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain regions.

Bearing resemblance to the car it is based on, the E-Tron S Sportback also distinguishes itself by exposing a multitude of ‘S’ elements on the exterior and interior. Its hallmark elements include a more aggressive bumper with quad slats in place of the chrome available on the standard offering. Identical treatment is observed with the boomerang-shaped area just above the bumper to elaborate its sporty pretensions. On the side, its octagonal single-frame construction is apparent, a characteristic that has to be present in a coupe-SUV. However, something that sets the tone for an idyllic style are massive red brake callipers, flared fenders for a foreboding prima-facie and haunches that flex themselves at the rear for an imposing impression. Arguably, it is the rear which leaves one spellbound with swept-back tail lamps, sliver of chrome on the bumper and diffuser kit which also exude class, an important deal-maker for Audi.

Ingress into the cockpit and it is as though you have been summoned by the future. Splashes of high-grade trim is what one notices first while being enchanted with the generous use of alcantara on the door sides and oodles of leather swathing the car to provide its fastidious occupants the feel of being laid on an emperor’s chariot. Audi’s excellent virtual cockpit system exists and is complemented by two screens encroaching upon the centre console. Where a medley of EVs is assuaging conventional gearbox designs, Audi has shoehorned a chunky gearstick with a lever to toggle through its common functions. However, a major USP on the inside is the two screens on the peripheries of the doors picturing objects on the left and right side of the car, respectively and thin cameras substituting wing mirrors that provide real images of the surroundings through graphics. What a novelty!

On the feature front, Audi has made sure the car is nothing short of exotic with luxury appointments such as adjustable bespoke contoured seats as an option with quilted leather and temperature selection, navigation and touchscreen infotainment system controlled through the brand’s MMI system, electric seats and electric tailgate among others.

The car’s locomotion duty is overlooked by an 86.5 kWh battery that is capable of providing 330 km of actual range depending on one’s driving style and how much of the 503 hp and 973 Nm of torque is utilised. The battery is capable of shooting the car towards the triple digit rampart in a smashing 4.5 seconds! To add to the ease of charging the car, it comes with dual charging ports which can fast charge up to 150 kW for the mundane duties. As an addendum, the E-Tron S Sportback comes standard with a 9.6 kW AC Level 2 charger along with a complimentary home charger and installation. The grunt is laid down on the road through three electric motors where an arrangement has been made such that separate motors have been provided to the rear wheels for torque vectoring and precise handling.

Speaking on the launch of this ground-breaking sequel to other Audi EVs in its lineup, Audi Abu Dhabi General Manager, Mark Austin commented, “The Audi DNA is firmly entrenched in all our electrically powered models and the new e-tron S Sportback is yet another stunning introduction from the brand. The arrival of the high-performance model across our showrooms comes at a time where there is a growing demand for EVs. The recent agreement signed between Audi Middle East, Siemens and the United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MoEI) to boost the electric vehicle (EV) charging capacity on federal roads aims to further increase the adoption of EVs across the country. We are committed to providing our customers with a comprehensive line-up of EV vehicles that bring electrification and performance together seamlessly.”

Audi made a grand entry in the future with its E-Tron SUV and looking at the current scheme of things, the E-Tron S Sportback makes a compelling case for itself bringing performance, luxury and comfort into one practical package that is appropriate to handle the regular duties when the adrenaline rush is not so much to go all-out on a racetrack. However, with an increasing number of luxury and mainstream carmakers eyeing this spot, will the E-Tron S Sportback succeed in holding its glory?
