Mercedes Benz E Class

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been one of the ‘bread and butter’ models for the German automaker for a long time. Incredibly, and in one form or another, the E-Class has been in production since the early 1950s. Today, this executive luxury sedan is one of the marquee’s most in-demand models ever. In the traditional sense, the E-Class slots right between the smaller C-Class, and the larger, flagship S-Class.

Back in 2016, the E-Class was given a thorough facelift and it evolved into its present, fifth generation avatar. The standard 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan competes with segment heavyweights such as the BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, Jaguar XF, and Lexus ES. However, the costlier E63 AMG goes up against the Porsche Panamera, Maserati Quattroporte, Audi RS7, and the BMW M5 sedan.

Exterior

The exterior sculpture of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan is truly elegant and effortless in its style. It borrows many of the design cues from the S-Class, and this means that the E-Class now looks a whole lot more posh and upmarket than it has ever before.

The front is dominated by a large, double-slotted grille with the brand logo in the middle, svelte headlights with dual LED strips for the daytime-running lights, and well-sculpted bumper with multiple air intakes to aid aerodynamics and cooling. The taut side profile with its stretched out visuals gives this sedan a purposeful, yet chic stance. The large boot at the rear gets a chrome bar running between the taillights, which itself houses cool, triple-LED elements and further adds to the air of sophistication.

Externally, the 2019 E-Class sedan (E63 AMG) measures 4.993 meters in length, 1.907 meters in width, 1.460 meters in height, and its wheelbase spans 2.939 meters. The total cargo volume in the E-Class is 540 liters.

Interior

The interior of the 2019 Mercedes-Benz E-Class is dripping with class and effortless elegance. It helps that it’s also well-appointed and features some of the best materials available in the market. The front dash and console layout not only look beautiful and elegant, but are modern and advanced as well.

There’s no evident sign of cost-cutting, and the build is solid with no rattles or squeaks. The perforated leather seats are plush and comfortable, and room in the back is good too. The feature-packed 2019 E-Class can be equipped with radar cruise control, adaptive dampers, automatic adaptive LED headlights and wipers, electric sunroof, premium leather upholstery, heated, cooled, and massaging front seats, power boot release, intelligent keyless entry with push-button ignition, dual 12.3-inch multifunction displays, and a high-end sound system.

Safety equipment on offer includes a full complement of airbags (total of 8) and various other safety nannies. Aside from the usual, the latter also includes traction control, electronic stability program, driver attention assist, collision detection, surround camera system, plus blind spot and lane departure warning.

Engine and performance

The 2019 E-Class is available with four, six, and eight-cylinder engines, in RWD or AWD configuration, and all models come mated to a new 9-speed automatic transmission. The least powerful 2.0-liter four-popper makes 184 HP and 300 Nm of torque, while the twin-turbo V8 in the astonishing AMG E 63 S dishes out 612 HP and 850 Nm of torque.

The four-cylinder cars offer fuel economy figures of between 5.9-6.9L/100 km, while six-cylinder ones average between 7.8-8.4L/100 km. Meanwhile, the tire-shredding AMG E 63 S does 0-100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, and is electronically-limited to a top speed of 250 km/h.
