What if you want a car that shares the crossover SUV design and high seating position with the X3, but at a price similar to that of a 3-Series sedan? Well, BMW knew about this very scenario and realized that they need to address the growing demand for a model to fit the bill. This is why they began work on a more compact version of the popular X3, but ensured that it didn’t cost much more than a 3-Series. So, in 2009, the BMW X1 was launched as a subcompact crossover SUV (or SAV in BMW speak), to act as a starting point into the brand’s SUV portfolio.

The first generation BMW X1 was based on the 3-Series wagon from 2007, and it soon went on to become one of the top performers for the German carmaker. Currently in its second generation, the new 2019 BMW X1 shares its underpinnings with the Mini Countryman. In the UAE, the 2019 BMW X1 competes against the likes of the Mercedes-Benz GLA, Range Rover Evoque, Lexus NX, and Porsche Macan.

Exterior

The 2019 BMW X1 has taken several styling and design inspirations from its X3 elder sibling, and that is a good thing. Because even though the original X1 was a sales hit for BMW, it received much flak for its controversial design aesthetics. Thankfully, the updated 2019 avatar looks far more polished, upmarket, and urbane, courtesy of the X3’s influence.

The aggressive fascia now features larger and more prominent kidney grille, sweptback LED headlamp design, and a meaty front bumper with integrated fog lights, air intakes, and a faux skid plate. The lower stance of the X1 is evident when viewed side on, though it is still higher than a regular sedan or hatchback. Also visible here are the flared fenders, chic 18-inch alloy wheels, and acres of black plastic lower-body cladding. The rear gets stylish LED taillights, a rooftop spoiler, and a sporty bumper with a faux skid plate and twin exhaust pipes.

The 2019 BMW X1 comes in at 4,439 meters in length, 2.060 meters in overall width, 1.612 meters in height, and has a wheelbase of 2.670 meters. This BMW’s vast boot also reveals a deep 505-liter luggage space.

Interior

The interior of the 2019 BMW X1 is largely similar to some of their other cars, though it is definitely not as opulent as the ones found in the latest, more expensive BMW models. The quality of materials is mostly premium, but there are low-rent plastics below. Another letdown is the slightly drab, uninspiring design of this interior, though overall build quality and fit and finish is good. The cabin is roomier than before, and there’s sufficient space for three occupants at the back.

Noteworthy features on the 2019 BMW X1 include leather upholstery, automatic LED headlights, power tailgate, panoramic glass roof, dual-zone climate control, electronic handbrake, ambient lighting, front and rear parking sensors with camera, iDrive touch-infotainment screen with navigation, and a premium audio system. The X1’s safety gadgets include the standard array of airbags and electronic nannies.

Engine and performance

The 2019 BMW X1 is powered by a turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-popper that produces 192 HP and 280 Nm of torque. This comes paired to an 8-speed transmission and FWD as standard, though the top variant gets an AWD system. The latter scoots to the ton mark in 6.5 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 235 km/h. Meanwhile, fuel economy for the BMW X1 varies between 6.0-6.6L/100 km.

Verdict

The 2019 BMW X1 costs from AED 189,000 to AED 235,000 for the sDrive20i and xDrive25i, respectively, whilst insurance ranges between AED 4,253 and AED 5,288.
