Volvo is one of the low-profile car brands in UAE and GCC region, which is why we were particularly curious about the 2013 Volvo XC70 and how it would fare against more marketed models by rivals. The results were fascinating to say the least.

Driving Performance

Ok first we need to get something out of our system! On the outset this looks like a cross between an SUV and a Station Wagon. The shape needs serious restyling. We don't like to judge a book by it's cover but with that kind of styling, Volvo has serious competition. They need to take a leaf from Korean competitors like Hyundai, the way they restyled Hyundai Santa Fe and other models. We feel much better now, thank you!

Going back to driving performance, you definitely feel serious power behind the wheels. This is a quick one, 304 horsepower and 440 Nm of torque is serious business. Mind you this is thanks to Polestar technology which has enabled it so you won't find the same performance in regular versions. Combined fuel consumption is 10.6L / 100 km which is not bad for a family SUV. This is a 6 cylinder, 6 speed All Wheel Drive Turbocharged engine so yes, we have no qualms in giving high marks on driving performance. Blows away most 5 seater SUV's in the market. Bravo.

Interior

Volvo is a premium European brand and it's quite apparent in the interior.

High quality finishing, comfortable seats, great insulation and efficient technology make a power combination. There are at least 3 electric sockets, USB connection, Bluetooth and high quality sound. The Blind Spot Information system or BLIS is also very effective.

There is no sunroof which is a let down as most SUV's today have sun roof in full option models. There are no rear A/C vents which is also expected of most SUV's in the market.

There are some excellent safety features including automatic braking system, side airbags and warning systems. On safety features this is up there with the best in class.

Trunk space is more than adequate, with all seats folded you still get excellent space in the rear, probably more than most 5 seater SUV's in the segment. This is a long vehicle so there is no shortage of legroom or interior space. Add to that convenience features such as roof rails, grocery holders, extra removable partitions and you have an SUV that is very road-trip friendly. It will be a pleasure to use this car on long road trips such as Dubai - Salalah or Jeddah to Riyadh. Top notch on interior spaciousness and convenience.

Verdict

Volvo needs to come up with a better exterior style for XC70. It also needs to add a few more interior comfort features. We do give it full marks in terms of performance, high quality finishing and safety technology. Of course you pay for it, as the XC70 Polestar edition will set you back 189,900 AED for the full options model. All in all a spacious, high performance, premium contender for 5 seater families.
