Built three years back to compete with the Audi TT, the Peugeot RCZ sports coupe now has a few fine features set as standard as part of its recent update. With its six speed transmission and the 1.6L engine with 156 bhp, this coupe is a smooth, sporty drive with excellent road grip, although it lacked in power at times when we could have done with a bit more of a push.

Driving Performance

The million dollar question is: does the RCZ drive well? The answer is a resounding yes. With one or two provisos. It’s a bumpy ride on bumpy streets, but on the finest roads in the Middle East, the Peugeot RCZ can’t fail to impress, clinging to the road, cornering with conviction, if not always consistently. The rear spoiler comes as standard, lending the confidence of stability to speedy manoeuvres, and the settable cruise control and speed limiter functions give drivers the opportunity for reduced fatigue and improved comfort on long drives.

Visibility out of the rear window is not the best, due to its thick pillars on either side, and not helped by the design-led double-bubble roof which leads down to the rear screen. On the other hand, the power foldable wing mirrors have a good visual reach, enabling the driver to see more than enough to safely park.

This is a better drive than Toyota 86 for sure. And we like the engine sound, so we took a video clip to give you a preview:

Interior

With soft-touch coverings on the dashboard and premium-look plastics and trim, the Peugeot RCZ’s interior exudes good quality for money. Its front electrical leather sport seats with memory foam are designed practically, supporting the sitter without causing discomfort later in the journey. Tilt and telescopic adjustments can be made to the steering wheel, although the seats only have limited height change capabilities which don’t match so well.

While there is plenty of leg room in the front, the rear seats of the Peugeot RCZ are blatantly unsuitable for anyone over 4’6” in height. The boot has the spare wheel strapped on the top with no bottom compartment, which means most of the boot space gets taken up by the tire.

Also the seatbelts in front are quite far away behind the chairs to be easily strapped on, small price to pay for the sporty looking stylish interior.

To go with its up to date coupe look, the RCZ has a cool collection of standard features, helping with comfort, safety aids, driving aids and entertainment.

With automatic dual zone air conditioning, and a cool vent inside the glove compartment, the Peugeot RCZ comes up against the hot, dry climate in the Middle East without so much as breaking a sweat. Should rain become a problem, the wiper blades react automatically. Head and rear lamps respond to reduced exterior light, and the front and rear parking sensors can assist in tight spots.

Four front and side airbags provide minimal passenger impact should the unthinkable occur, and safety is also built into the brake systems, with anti-lock braking (ABS) and electronic stability (ESP) working in tandem to balance the loss of steer when cornering.

Verdict

This is a turbocharged drive, definitely beats Japanese competition on drive performance. However it could improve a bit in the exterior styling department and some interior issues like boot space and seatbelt usability can be improved. Also in terms of practicality, this is not the most practical of cars in the luggage and spaciousness department, however it targets an audience which may not really need practicality to begin with.
