Quick Review

The 2012 BMW GT is a unique alternative to luxury sedans and SUVs. Its body style sits somewhere between a wagon, hatchback and a sedan. But with a powerful engine and luxurious interiors, this might just be the start of a new trend.First off, let’s make it clear that the 2012 BMW GT remains mostly unchanged from last year following 2011’s redesign, which gave the model better fuel efficiency, a longer wheelbase and more traditional styling.

Still, the BMW GT is without a doubt one of the most comfortable vehicles in its segment. It’s a quiet drive with premium, excellently laid-out interiors, while the front and rear seat comfort is unparalleled. When you’re sat in the driver’s seat there’s no doubt about it: this is definitely a handsome car.

The GT also has an impressive amount of power and acceleration, with decent fuel efficiency. No matter which model you go for, each engine delivers strong continuous torque and pushes the GT from 0-100 kmh in under 7 seconds, (5.5 seconds for the top of the range 550i). The downside is a lack of finesse in the handling when compared to the BMW sedans, as well as slightly under-responsive steering and a little less maneuverability than you’d like.

Either way it’s a little tricky to figure out who the GT's ideal market is, seeing as it's priced at roughly the same level as BMW’s biggest SUV. For families, that's a better bet for their money. But it’s hard to deny that the flexibility, pace and comfort of the GT is one hell of a package; recommended for high-end business travel or if you’re just looking for something a bit more powerful than high-end hatchbacks.

Rival peers in this unique segment include Mercedes Benz CLS-Class, Cadillac SRX and Infiniti EX.
